Shorebirding with Tom Bartlett

WCAS Saturday August 14, 2010

18 birders

41 species

WCAS birders visited Winous Point Shooting Club for shorebird banding by Tom Bartlett and his USGS team.  It was a great opportunity to appreciate the beautiful plumage of a variety of species ages and sexes of shorebirds close up.  Sunny 78-degree weather made it a perfect day on the dikes. Winous Point Shooting Club is a private preserve. It is the second-oldest hunting club in the United States, founded in 1856 by the some of the same families who founded the Cleveland Museum of Natural History.  The club’s Winous Point Marsh Conservancy supports wetlands research. We were guests of the property owners and the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. To finish the day we enjoyed a picnic with Laurie Boylan and Dave Lewis.

That was a WONDERFUL field trip to Winous Point - thank you to all who were in on the planning.  The bird banding by Tom Bartlett was so interesting, and he did a great job of showing us around - what an awesome piece of property that is that is being protected by the hunt club.

And Bob says to tell Joanne and Penny thank you soooooooooooo very much for the delicious chocolate chip cookies, and thank you to Mary Anne for putting in his request!  We missed you Tom and Mary Anne.

Penny - Those cookies and bread from the bakery were AWESOME!  So sorry Page wasn't feeling up to making it to the potluck.

And thanks to Tom and Cindy for the yummy potato salad!

Good birding,

Dave and the Doodles
