Heart of Hinckley
Leader: Mary Anne Romito

Target Species: Louisiana Waterthrush and other warbler specialties

Hinckley reservation offers a huge block of undeveloped habitat, perfect for birds in our Rocky River Important Bird Area. Join us Sunday June 19 for a walk to find Louisiana Waterthrush and other Hinckley specialties.  This is prime nesting season for our summer-breeding birds. Mary Anne Romito leads the walk at 7:30 a.m.

We will meet at the bridge parking lot on State Road.

Saturday July 9, 2011, 11:00 a.m.

Field trip and picnic at NASA Plum Brook Station

Saturday, July 9, 2011, 11 a.m.
Leader: John Blakeman

Target species: grassland birds, dare we hope for a Sedge Wren or a Dickcissel?

Notice: You must register by Wednesday, June 29, 2011 in order to be part of this field trip. All attendees must be US citizens, and adults must bring photo id. Binoculars, scopes and cameras are okay. To register, e-mail, call, or write to Penny O’Connor (See below)

NASA Plum Brook Station covers about ten square miles. Some of the space is devoted to NASA test facilities, but the greatest part is dedicated to nature. Expect to see native pre-settlement prairie landscapes and a cathedral-like oak-hickory forest. Our leader, John Blakeman, a falconer, dedicates his time to restoring and maintaining the plant diversity. As the land was converted from farm to arsenal before herbicides were used in agriculture, the plant life is quite diverse. Plum Brook is home to unique varieties of the New England aster and Lakeside/Great Lakes daisy.  Dare we hope to see an endangered Sedge Wren or a Dickcissel?

Our trip will be largely a natural history tour of Plum Brook Station. We will caravan 7-8 miles, with 4-7 stops in significant habitats.  Bring a lunch, as we will stop to bird and picnic along the way. (sorry, no grills)

Registration deadline is Wednesday, June 29, 2011. All attendees must be US citizens, and adults must bring photo id. To register, e-mail, call, or write to Penny O’Connor pjo@earthlink.net  (216)676-4859, 4534 Grayton Rd. Cleveland, Ohio 44135.  Be sure to include your full name, address and telephone number.

Carbon Offset WCAS Project

Carbon Offset logoIt has been said that if you drive 100 miles to see a rare bird, and you can actually identify that bird, you are a true birder!  Since we love traveling to look for birds, but at the same time, we care about our environment, Western Cuyahoga Audubon offers a way to offset the carbon impact of some of this driving. It is the Carbon Offset WCAS Project, modeled on the effort launched at the 2011 Midwest Birding Symposium.

Here is how it works: Any time we have a field trip where more than 100 miles of travel may be involved (Think Killdeer Plains or Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge) participants may voluntarily contribute to a fund, based on mileage.  Monies generated by carbon offset will go toward habitat preservation in our Rocky River Important Bird Area, or in another area of local interest.

While there are many carbon offset models and calculators, we offer a simple formula.

Compact car: driver only - 10 cents per mile, additional passengers 5 cents each per mile. Multiply these amounts by the total miles and divide by 10.

Mid-sized car: driver only - 20 cents per mile, additional passengers 10 cents per mile. Multiply these amounts by the total miles and divide by 10.

Truck or larger van: driver only - 25 cents per mile, additional passengers 15 cents per mile. Multiply these amounts by the total miles and divide by 10.

For example, if I drive to Killdeer Plains, the round trip will be 250 miles. I usually have two passengers, so I will figure 10 plus 5 plus 5 cents per mile for a total of 20 cents per mile. Twenty times 250 divided by 10 equals 500, so I will put in $5.00 for carbon offset.  Note that rounding to the nearest 50 miles when calculating your trip distance may produce an easier payment amount.

This is completely voluntarily, just another way to help, and of course any donation to the fund is welcome.

You may use this handy form to accompany your donation.
