Western Cuyahoga Audubon Society River Styx field trip, Sunday, May 31, 2009 Leader: Dan Bertsch, Chief Naturalist, Medina County Park District A Ruby-throated Hummingbird performed U-shaped courtship flights. Brown Thrashers and Field Sparrows flew about in pairs. A Hooded Warbler sat quietly on her nest by some Blue Cohosh about two feet off the ground. A Blue-winged Warbler came out in the bright sun eager to challenge his rivals. Several other birds carried food. At River Styx Park in Medina County the birds not already taking care of nests were working to start a family. Besides showing us great views of the birds, leader Dan Bertsch identified plants. Another highlight was a red fox who came through just before most of the birders arrived. Bird sightings from this field trip will be entered into the Ohio Breeding Bird Atlas. 48 bird species 1 red fox 8 birders Canada Goose Mallard Great Blue Heron Turkey Vulture Red-shouldered Hawk Broad-winged Hawk Mourning Dove Chimney Swift Ruby-throated Hummingbird (courtship display) Red-bellied Woodpecker Downy Woodpecker Hairy Woodpecker Northern Flicker Pileated Woodpecker Eastern Wood Pewee Acadian Flycatcher Willow Flycatcher Eastern Phoebe Red-eyed Vireo Blue Jay American Crow Barn Swallow Black-capped Chickadee Tufted titmouse White-breasted nuthatch Blue-gray Gnatcatcher Wood Thrush American Robin Gray Catbird Brown Thrasher Cedar Waxwing Blue-winged Warbler Yellow Warbler American Redstart Common Yellowthroat Hooded Warbler (on nest) Scarlet Tanager, Orange Phase Eastern Towhee Chipping Sparrow Field Sparrow Song Sparrow Northern Cardinal Rose-Breasted Grosbeak Indigo Bunting Red-winged Blackbird Common Grackle Brown-headed Cowbird American Goldfinch |
