UltraWalk

You can contribute to the Rocky River Important Bird Area Breeding Bird Survey even if you aren’t a topnotch birder.

Western Cuyahoga Audubon Society needs people to take part in the 2010 UltraWalk  & UltraBirdon Saturday, June 5, to raise funds for the administration of the survey.  If you like to walk, consider walking with us for conservation of the Rocky River valley!

This is Year Five of a five-year survey to provide data that Cleveland Metroparks can use to support requests for funds to purchase land parcels in the Rocky River valley in order to protect them from development.

The most challenging part of the UltraWalk is the 31-mile trek from Hinckley Reservation to Lakewood.  We will begin at Buzzard’s Roost at 6:00 a.m. and finish at the Emerald Necklace Marina at about 5:30 p.m.  If you’re not up to that level of activity, consider walking from Ranger Headquarters in Fairview, starting at about 3:00 p.m., where the Ultrawalkers will meet you and walk the remaining five miles to the marina.

You may also participate in the UltraBird (you use the same registration form). Participants will start at 6:00 a.m. with the UltraWalkers, but will follow at a much slower pace, birding along the Rocky River IBA. We will catch up with the UltraWalkers with our cars. The goal for the UltraBirders is to see or hear as many species as possible during the UltraBird day. In 2009, we had 75 species. What will we get this year?

By registering to walk, you would be committing to seeking pledges from relatives, friends, and co-workers for the miles you intend to walk.  Use the handy registration form found below.
